The story behind the work

Curatorial Provenance & Historical Significance

Originally created by Utagawa Hiroshige (1857) and preserved in the permanent collection of The Art Institute of Chicago (Object ID: #26577, Inventory Ref: 1925.3752), Plum Garden at Kameido (Color woodblock print; ōban) exemplifies the timeless mastery of Edo Ukiyo-e Woodblock. Our curatorial pre-press studio has digitally restored the high-resolution museum master (4211×6202 px), gently balancing tone and sharpening fine detail while preserving 100% of the original uncropped composition (Vertical (Portrait)).

Two Uncropped Collector Editions Available

Choose between our Museum Exhibition Poster Edition—featuring warm archival alabaster borders, a fine antique-bronze curatorial filet hugging the full painting, and Cormorant Garamond exhibition typography—or the Full Classic Painting Edition surrounded by a generous printed museum border in warm off-white that frames the painting like a gallery mount — printed directly on the paper, with no separate mat board.

Are these original paintings?

They are museum-grade reproductions of public-domain (CC0) masterpieces released through the open-access programmes of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Rijksmuseum and the Art Institute of Chicago. We restore each master file in-house, keep its original museum Object ID and print it at up to 300 DPI as an archival giclée — the closest you can live to the original.

What's the difference between the two editions?

Museum Exhibition Poster — the full painting on warm alabaster borders with a fine gold curatorial filet and exhibition typography, like the posters sold at the great museum shops.

Full Classic Painting — the complete, uncropped painting surrounded by a generous printed museum border in warm off-white. Both editions show 100% of the original composition.

What paper and inks do you use?

250 gsm museum-quality archival matte paper — uncoated, acid-free and natural off-white, with zero glare — printed with archival pigment inks.

Do the frames arrive ready to hang?

Yes. Choose solid natural oak or a matte black gallery frame; both come with crystal-clear shatterproof plexiglass and arrive ready to hang out of the box.
